The Appalachian Arts Craft Center is a hidden gem in Anderson County offering multiple craft classes and a place to buy one-of-a kind handmade gifts made by local artisans.

Appalachian Arts began as the Community Craft Center in 1970 in the back room of an old grocery store. The center was founded by Grace Foster and Sara Shepard Starr, who had been hired “to enrich the souls and pocketbooks of low-income people in Anderson County.” Eventually a non-profit 501(c)3 status was obtained, weaving, quilting, and pottery classes were begun, and a shop was opened. The Center has grown to become a highly recognized educational facility and, in 1987, built a new building with a shop upstairs and studio space downstairs. They now “promote the Appalachian Artist through education and sales.”

A wide variety of classes are offered throughout the year; weaving, quilting, pottery, and jewelry making just to name a few. All skill levels are invited to participate in classes. Registration is required, so be sure to check their website for information on classes, cost and registration dates.  The center also makes a great place to host birthday parties or homeschool groups.

If you would rather shop than create, the Appalachian Arts Craft Center has got you covered.  Their gift shop offers a wide array of handmade and unique gifts from local artisans. Beautiful handmade quilts, one-of-a-kind jewelry, paintings and more!   It's a great place to find that hard to shop for person in your family the perfect gift.

Membership to the center is available, however not required. To learn more about the perks of becoming a member, click here.
